Export from Character.AI

Needs a desktop browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari). Can't drag it to the bar? Copy the bookmarklet code, create a new bookmark, and paste the code as its address. Want to check what it does first? Read the full script. It's short and commented.

How to export a Character.AI character

1. Add the bookmark

Drag the Export from Character.AI button above to your bookmarks bar. You only do this once.

2. Open a chat and click it

Sign in to character.ai as you normally would and open a chat with the character. Click the bookmark. It scrolls back through the conversation, loads the whole history, and downloads a file.

3. Keep it or import it

The .personatext.json file is yours. Store it, open it in another app, or import it into PersonaText. Repeat for each character.

What gets saved

  • The character's name, tagline and full definition (when the creator makes it visible)
  • The greeting
  • The profile picture, embedded in the file
  • The full chat history, in order
  • The character's lorebook (each entry's title, text and keywords), which becomes lore book entries here
  • Extra details such as the image prompt, starter prompts, extra greetings and voice ID, kept in the file
  • Alternate replies you swiped past. Only the reply you kept is saved.
  • Message timestamps, chat memory and your own Character.AI persona
  • Characters whose creators have hidden the definition: you get everything else, but not the hidden part
  • Lorebook entries that a creator keeps private
  • Other characters in one go: it exports the chat you have open, one at a time
Your data stays with you

The exporter runs inside your own browser tab. It never asks for your password, and it doesn't send anything to PersonaText or anyone else. It reads only the character and chat you have open and saves them to your downloads folder.

Take it anywhere

The file is a standard Character Card V2, the character format used by SillyTavern and many other chat apps, with your chat history added alongside. Apps that don't know about the chat part still load the character. Nothing locks you in, here or anywhere.

Questions

No. You sign in to Character.AI yourself, the normal way. The exporter works on the page you already have open and never asks for your login. It doesn't send your data anywhere; the file just downloads to your computer.

Add the bookmark from this page, open the chat on character.ai, and click it. It loads the full history by scrolling to the beginning and downloads the character and conversation as one file. It can take a little while on very long chats.

Yes. It's a standard Character Card V2 JSON file, so apps that read character cards can load the character. The chat history is stored in an extra field, so some apps will ignore it. The file is plain JSON, so you can also read it or convert it yourself.

Not yet. The exporter saves the chat you have open, so run it once per character.

It's built for desktop browsers, because bookmarklets are awkward on phones. Use a computer for the export, then you can import and chat from anywhere.

The exporter reads Character.AI's pages as they are today, so a redesign on their side could break it. If it fails, you'll see an error message in the page. Let us know and we'll fix it.
